On a snowy Sunday afternoon in Manhattan, something truly special happened. Despite the heavy snow that blanketed the city, the warmth inside the hall was palpable. My recent solo recital wasn’t just another performance; it was a deeply personal milestone in my journey as an NYC-based pop music composer and pianist.

Owning the Stage: From Preparation to Presence Walking onto the stage, I’ll admit I felt the weight of the moment. Even as an award-winning pianist, that quiet moment before the first note always feels like a leap of faith. However, as the first chords filled the room, the nerves transformed into a deep sense of presence. I wasn’t just performing; I was sharing a piece of my soul, owning the stage not just as a musician, but as a storyteller.

The Music: Bridging Traditions and Modern Storytelling The program featured five of my original Chinese pop (Mandopop) compositions, which are pieces that carry different chapters of my journey, including works that have collectively reached over 36,000 streams on Spotify. These works reflect my growth during my Pop Music studies at The City College of New York, where I focused on blending classical foundations with contemporary original songwriting. The greatest feedback that I have heard was that people were touched by my songs and stories, and that’s what my recital was supposed to be about.

Gratitude for the Support System This night was a testament to the community that sustains me:

  • To my Professor, Dr. Laughlin: I am profoundly grateful for your mentorship. Your guidance at Georgia Southwestern State University helped me navigate the transition from a Pro Musica Award recipient to a professional pop music composer.

  • To my Friends, Family, and Community: Braving the NYC snow to be there meant everything to me. Hearing that my music moved some to tears is the greatest affirmation of my path as a Christian singer and composer, to create music that offers emotional healing and wellness.

Looking Forward: Music, Spirit, and Innovation This recital reminded me that music is most powerful when it becomes a shared sanctuary. As I continue to develop my craft in New York, I am eager to explore how AI technology can further enhance original music storytelling while staying rooted in the acoustic intimacy of the piano.

Most of all, this night reminded me that I belong on that stage. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.
